Coarsegold,is a historic community located
at the southern tip of the Mother Lode on Highway 41, a half
hour from Fresno. Here you will
find the Yosemite Gallery and Indian Territory which has hands-on
demonstrations of gold panning. This little community is cleverly
decorated in Indian themes and has shops, artifacts and places
to eat. Coarsegold also has its own Peddler's Fair in May and
September.
Coarsegold
is where gold was first discovered in Eastern Madera County. About 1850,
the creek which now bears the town's name was the site of the
first discovery made by a group of Texas Miners. First called
Coarsegold Gulch, and for a while Texas Flat, the first deep
lode mine was here.
Coarsegold, is reminiscent of the days when ranching
was king. Cattle, sheep, and hogs were common. Old timers recount
family stories of the days before the railroad when bands of
hogs were driven more than 100 miles to Stockton markets.
All
that remains of Coarsegold's companion town of the gold rush
days, Finegold, which once boasted several thousand residents, is a creek bearing that name.
Today, Coarsegold
is a popular area for commuting families. Strategically located approximately
halfway between the "big city" of Fresno and the recreation
in the mountains. Housing areas like Indian Lakes and Yosemite
Lakes Park are popular middle class developments featuring recreational
areas. Yosemite Lakes Park also features golfing, shopping,
community pool, tennis, equestrian center and dining.
